Meet Dr Azman Raffiq – Expert Neurosurgeon

Dr Azman Raffiq is an expert with 23 years of active practice and experience as a doctor and 13 years as Neurosurgeon & Spine Surgeon. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine & Surgery in 2002 as the pioneer batch from International Islamic University Malaysia.

He started his career in medicine at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang in 2002 and served in the department of surgery till 2007. He subsequently joined the Department of Neurosurgery in Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 2007. He obtained his Masters degree in Neurosurgery in 2013 from University Sains Malaysia. He continued his service in Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 2013 till 2020 as a consultant neurosurgeon

He has a keen interest in Minimally Invasive Skull Base & Vascular surgery and attended attachment training at Severance hospital Seoul Korea & St Louis University Missouri USA. In 2018, he completed his Fellowship training in Spine Surgery at Sarawak General Hospital.

He initiated Awake Craniotomy for brain tumors in Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 2017 and successfully completed 30 cases of awake craniotomy during his tenure there.

In 2020, he was promoted as the Head of Department of Neurosurgery Hospital Pulau Pinang. During his tenure as the Head, he initiated spine surgery services for neurosurgery and introduced functional neurosurgery services, encompassing Awake Craniotomy for brain tumors & Deep Brain Stimulation surgery for Parkinsons disease, successfully completing 30 cases of awake craniotomy & 3 cases of DBS in Penang. For his contribution to the state services, he was bestowed with a state award of Darjah Jihan Negeri in 2023.

Dr Azman Raffq is actively involved in the training of neurosurgeons via the Masters of Neurosurgery USM – UM program, and in 2020 was elected as examiner for the masters program till date. He is also actively involved in the Neurosurgery Association of Malaysia, serving as the Honorary Secretary since 2023. In 2023, he received his Fellowship from the American College of Surgeons.
